Brainstorming

To start getting some ideas I have looked at types of Graphic design.

I then looked into specific areas

From this brainstorms I have decided to look into Band Merchandise as it gives me lots of avenues to go into to and it is an area of interest.

Album Cover designs

To understand how I want to design my album covers. I looked a various albums I had and how they were designed. I found a large contrast between album covers.

Brief

My brief is to create an album cover for a new indie band for an independent label. They do not have a name but would like to have a theme that links with being different and have a keen interest in aliens.

From previous research I had realised that most indie bands began with "The". I then let my peers choose names, the one that appeared most from my list was The Alternatives.

To get an idea about the theme of my album cover, I mind mapped words and stereotypes to do with the words.

Aspect to Aspect

This montage of ideas is used to set the scene. From my research of similar artefacts many album covers use designs that are in the style of a comic or designed by an iconic artist. Using a similar style as cartoonist Seth I tried to recreate scenes to do with artists. I used colours and edited the layers so that the colours worked together well. This is an alternative to Screen Printing

First I inked out three pages, each page contained a different inked part of the image.

I then scanned the images in and placed them on photoshop. I edited the threshold so that all I had was black and white.

I then made it a layer and removed the white by using the magic wand to select everything that was white.

I then placed all the layers for the specific image in one document and coloured them by selecting the object in the layer and colouring them

This how my page worked out. I used a complementry colour scheme with some complimentary yellow and orange, this made there be a relationship between the images.

I developed some images with other colours to see how they would work individually.

Scamps of Others

Facts book

To have a deeper understanding of music publishing and design I created a music themed booklet.

I first created a template that fitted with my accordion template. I placed it on separate layer so that it would be identical

I placed pictures within the document and ccropped them to fit the individual pages.

I aligned my text within every other box. I used a serif typeface as it contrasted with my curvy pattern.

I then printed onto both sides so that the background would be black.

Here is the the final product.

Convention of Album Cover

BryJin Copy

Through my research and development from unit 2 I wanted to combine illustration and photograph. This is similar to an album seen on my timeline of Lady Hawke. When I look into this I saw this became popular with the collaboration of Bryant Eslava, fashion photographer, and Hajin Bae, illustration.

Firstly, I placed the illustrated hair onto a white background. I lowered the opacity to make sure the photo and image lined up.

I then added a gradient to create the desired affect. I used a complementary colour scheme to create contrast and the effect of light and dark.

The illustration came out as I wanted but I feel the image is too low quality for it to come out with a great design. I might try to develop this in a more musical style.

BryJin Emulation

To see how this would work with musical instruments I used an image from the internet.

I inked my instruments I then edited the images so it appeared  they were holding the instruments and it was in presepective.

I then added a gradient to the illustrated images. I used a analogous colour scheme similar to some of BryJin's Work. This added so much colour made the image.

This is my final Front cover design.

Band and Album Names

From previous research I had realised that most indie bands began with "The". I then let my peers choose names, the one that appeared most from my list was The Alternatives.

To get an idea about the theme of my album cover, I mind mapped words and stereotypes to do with the words. My favourite was aliens due to the fact it is very broad and I can experiment with the meaning of the word.

My Scamps

Album Cover

To develop my ideas, I created scamps. I had to think about if I wanted text how I wanted it to be viewed. In many scamps I used previous experiments, such as aspect to aspect.

Album Sleeve
I have also created scamps for my sleeves which will contain a from with images and a back with lyrics.

Experimenting with Plasticine

To get a physical idea of how I want my aliens to look I used plasticine to create aliens and a spaceship. This also allowed me to  look at the colour scheme I want.
